Yoga is an ancient system of self development which takes into account all aspects of the person and suggests ways in which we can maintain health on physical, emotional, spiritual and vibrational levels. It encompasses an understanding of how the body works and the effect that food, breath, meditation and movement have on the body. Yoga is a sister to Ayurvedic medicine. If Ayurveda is the science, Yoga is the practice of that science.

Yoga encompasses metaphysical anatomy and physiology, which consists of nadis (subtle energy channels), chakras (energy centers) and bodily sheaths (aura and the kundalini energy).

Yoga recommends the regular practice of postures, breathwork and mindfulness meditation as well as the use of herbs, body purification procedures, food and mantras for physical and mental health. Keeping the body healthy is vital for fulfilling the key goals of life.

At Affinity Wellness we teach both Purna (integrated) and Yin yoga styles. These could be called the Yin and Yang of Yoga. We understand that not every body is made for every posture and we work with an organic alignment philosophy, taking into account each individuals body composition and structure.

Yang Yoga encompasses styles such as vinyasa (flow) and hatha. Involving postures that work the muscles and nervous system in a succession of functional postures, providing the body with strength and resillience whilst teaching flexibility, discipline and focus.

Yin Yoga is the process of working with the harder tissues in the body, the ligaments, tendons and bones. These are tissues that become compressed and bound up with stress and during day to day activities. Yin yoga takes the body through a series of long holds (3-5 minutes) providing traction on the joints, releasing fixation and the stress of compression. Yin yoga incorporates a strong meditation component and is a wonderful stress release therapy.
